Research Interests
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), a class of linear polyanionic polysaccharides composed of repeating disaccharides containing hexosamine, are ubiquitously distributed on cell surface and in the extracellular matrix of animal tissues and participate inalmost all physiological and pathological processes. Except nonsulfatedhyaluronan, the other three sulfated GAGs includingchondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate, heparin/heparan sulfate and keratan sulfate are synthesized as the side chains of proteoglycans (PGs) and form very complex structures due to various modifications, which presentsgreat challenges to the functionalstudy and application of GAGs/PGs. Research in the Li lab mainly focus on investigating the structure and function of GAGs/PGs by using and developing various tools and methods of biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology.Current research interests include:
(1) Resource mining, enzymatic characterization, catalytic mechanism research, molecular engineering and application of novel GAG-degrading enzymes (lyases, sulfatases, glycosidases, etc.) from marine and gut microbes;
(2) Study on the structure-function relationship of GAGs from various marine and terrestrial animals and development of related biomedical products;
(3) Development and application of new technologies forin vitro andin vivo analysis and detection of GAGs/PGs by screening and optimizing novel enzymatic tools and biocompatible probes
(4) Study on the role of cell surface PGs in the occurrence and development of cancer and other diseases
